    Nondeterministic hybrid dynamical systems

    This thesis is concerned with the analysis, control and identification of hybrid dynamical systems. The main focus is on a particular class of hybrid systems consisting of linear subsystems. The discrete dynamic, i.e., the change between subsystems, is unknown or nondeterministic and cannot be influenced, i.e. controlled, directly. However changes in the discrete dynamic can be detected immediately, such that the current dynamic (subsystem) is known. In order to motivate the study of hybrid systems and show the merits of hybrid control theory, an example is given. It is shown that real world systems like Anti Locking Brakes (ABS) are naturally modelled by such a class of linear hybrids systems. It is shown that purely continuous feedback is not suitable since it cannot achieve maximum braking performance. A hybrid control strategy, which overcomes this problem, is presented. For this class of linear hybrid system with unknown discrete dynamic, a framework for robust control is established. The analysis methodology developed gives a robustness radius such that the stability under parameter variations can be analysed. The controller synthesis procedure is illustrated in a practical example where the control for an active suspension of a car is designed. Optimal control for this class of hybrid system is introduced. It is shows how a control law is obtained which minimises a quadratic performance index. The synthesis procedure is stated in terms of a convex optimisation problem using linear matrix inequalities (LMI). The solution of the LMI not only returns the controller but also the performance bound. Since the proposed controller structures require knowledge of the continuous state, an observer design is proposed. It is shown that the estimation error converges quadratically while minimising the covariance of the estimation error. This is similar to the Kalman filter for discrete or continuous time systems. Further, we show that the synthesis of the observer can be cast into an LMI, which conveniently solves the synthesis problem

    Optimal control for systems with varying sampling rate

    The paper addresses the aspects of control of real time systems with varying sampling rate. An example is given in which a stable continuous system is sampled at two different sampling rates. Two controllers are designed to minimize the same continuous quadratic loss function with the same weights. It is shown that although the design leads to stable controlled closed loop systems, for both discretizations, the resulting system can be unstable due to variations in sampling rate. To avoid that problem, we suggest an optimal controller design in which a bound on the cost, for all possible sampling rate variations, is computed. This results in a piecewise constant state feedback control law and guarantees stability regardless of the variations in sampling rate. The controller synthesis is cast into an LMI, which conveniently solves the synthesis problem. To illustrate the procedure, the introduction example is revised using the proposed LMI synthesis method and the stable control law is given, which is robustly stable against variations in sampling rate

    Control of sampled data systems with variable sampling rate

    This paper addresses stability and performance of sampled-data systems with variable sampling rate, where the change between sam- pling rates is decided by a scheduler. A motivational example is pre- sented, where a stable continuous time system is controlled with two sampling rates. It is shown that the resulting system could be unsta- ble when the sampling changes between these two rates, although each individual closed-loop system is stable under the designed controller that minimizes the same continuous loss function. Two solutions are presented in this paper. The ÂŻrst solution is to impose restrictions on switching sequences such that only stable sequences are chosen. The second solution presented is more general, where a piecewise constant state feedback control law is designed which guarantees stability for all possible variations of sampling rate. Furthermore, the performance definedn by a continuous time quadratic cost function for the sampled-data system with variable sampling rate can be optimised using the proposed synthesis method

    Synthetic surfactants in Swiss sewage sludges: Analytical challenges, concentrations and per capita loads

    Surfactants are high-production-volume chemicals that are among the most abundant organic pollutants in municipal wastewater. In this study, sewage sludge samples of 36 Swiss wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), serving 32% of the country's population, were analyzed for major surfactant classes by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The analyses required a variety of complementary approaches due to different analytical challenges, including matrix effects (which can affect adduction formation) and the lack of reference standards. The most abundant contaminants were linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS; weighted mean [WM] concentration of 3700 mu g g(-1) dry weight), followed by secondary alkane sulfonates (SAS; 190 mu g g(-1)). Alcohol polyethoxylates (AGO; 8.3 mu g g(-1)), nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEO; 16 mu g g(-1)), nonylphenol (NP; 3.1 mu g g(-1)), nonylphenol ethoxy carboxylates (NPEC; 0.35 mu g g(-1)) and ten-octylphenol (tert-OP, 1.8 mu g g(-1)) were present at much lower concentrations. This concentration pattern agrees with the production volumes of the surfactants and their fates in WWTPs. Branched AEO homologues dominated over linear homologues, probably due to higher persistence. Sludge concentrations of LAS, SAS, and NP were positively correlated with the residence time in the anaerobic digester. Derivation of the per capita loads successfully revealed potential industrial/commercial emission sources. Comparison of recent versus historic data showed a decrease in NPEO and NP levels by one or two orders of magnitude since their ban in the 1980s. By contrast, LAS still exhibit similar concentrations compared to 30 years ago

    What is an Appropriate Educational Response to Controversial Historical Monuments?

    There are many things that can be done to educate young people about controversial topics - including historical monuments - in schools. At the same time, however, we argue that there is little warrant for optimism concerning the educational potential of classroom instruction given the interpretative frame of the state-approved history curriculum; the onerous institutional constraints under which school teachers must labour; the unusual constellation of talents history teachers must possess; the frequent absence of marginalized voices in these conversations; and finally, the not unlikely indifference - if not outright hostility - expressed by far too many members of the dominant group. For these reasons, we think it best to expand the scope of educational possibilities one is willing to consider

    DC-SIGN Polymorphisms Associated with Risk of Hepatitis C Virus Infection Among Men who Have Sex with Men but not Among Injecting Drug Users

    We aimed to identify whether genetic polymorphisms within L-SIGN or DC-SIGN correlate with HCV susceptibility. An MSM and an IDU cohort of HCV cases and multiple-exposed uninfected controls were genotyped for numerous L-SIGN and DC-SIGN polymorphisms. DC-SIGN SNPs -139, -871 and -939 correlate with HCV acquisition in the MSM cohort only. When the same SNPs were introduced into a transcription activity assay they demonstrated a reduction in expression with predicted alteration in binding of transcription factors. DC-SIGN promoter SNPs correlate with risk of HCV acquisition via sexual but not IDU exposure, likely through modulation of mRNA expression levels

    Genetic transformation and genomic resources for next-generation precise genome engineering in vegetable crops

    In the frame of modern agriculture facing the predicted increase of population and general environmental changes, the securement of high quality food remains a major challenge to deal with. Vegetable crops include a large number of species, characterized by multiple geographical origins, large genetic variability and diverse reproductive features. Due to their nutritional value, they have an important place in human diet. In recent years, many crop genomes have been sequenced permitting the identification of genes and superior alleles associated with desirable traits. Furthermore, innovative biotechnological approaches allow to take a step forward towards the development of new improved cultivars harboring precise genome modifications. Sequence-based knowledge coupled with advanced biotechnologies is supporting the widespread application of new plant breeding techniques to enhance the success in modification and transfer of useful alleles into target varieties. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 system, zinc-finger nucleases, and transcription activator-like effector nucleases represent the main methods available for plant genome engineering through targeted modifications. Such technologies, however, require efficient transformation protocols as well as extensive genomic resources and accurate knowledge before they can be efficiently exploited in practical breeding programs. In this review, we revise the state of the art in relation to availability of such scientific and technological resources in various groups of vegetables, describe genome editing results obtained so far and discuss the implications for future applications

    Early versus Delayed Decompression for Traumatic Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: Results of the Surgical Timing in Acute Spinal Cord Injury Study (STASCIS)

    BACKGROUND:There is convincing preclinical evidence that early decompression in the setting of spinal cord injury (SCI) improves neurologic outcomes. However, the effect of early surgical decompression in patients with acute SCI remains uncertain. Our objective was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of early (<24 hours after injury) versus late (≥ 24 hours after injury) decompressive surgery after traumatic cervical SCI. METHODS:We performed a multicenter, international, prospective cohort study (Surgical Timing In Acute Spinal Cord Injury Study: STASCIS) in adults aged 16-80 with cervical SCI. Enrolment occurred between 2002 and 2009 at 6 North American centers. The primary outcome was ordinal change in ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) grade at 6 months follow-up. Secondary outcomes included assessments of complications rates and mortality. FINDINGS:A total of 313 patients with acute cervical SCI were enrolled. Of these, 182 underwent early surgery, at a mean of 14.2(± 5.4) hours, with the remaining 131 having late surgery, at a mean of 48.3(± 29.3) hours. Of the 222 patients with follow-up available at 6 months post injury, 19.8% of patients undergoing early surgery showed a ≥ 2 grade improvement in AIS compared to 8.8% in the late decompression group (OR = 2.57, 95% CI:1.11,5.97). In the multivariate analysis, adjusted for preoperative neurological status and steroid administration, the odds of at least a 2 grade AIS improvement were 2.8 times higher amongst those who underwent early surgery as compared to those who underwent late surgery (OR = 2.83, 95% CI:1.10,7.28). During the 30 day post injury period, there was 1 mortality in both of the surgical groups. Complications occurred in 24.2% of early surgery patients and 30.5% of late surgery patients (p = 0.21). CONCLUSION:Decompression prior to 24 hours after SCI can be performed safely and is associated with improved neurologic outcome, defined as at least a 2 grade AIS improvement at 6 months follow-up
